A Dated Primary Bathroom is Transformed with Custom Oak Cabinetry, Handmade Tile and a More Open Shower Design.
The homeowners had already brought a modern, contemporary feel to other areas of their home, but their primary bathroom no longer felt connected to the rest of the space. Dated finishes, worn cabinetry and previous water-related concerns made it time for more than a cosmetic update.
Custom One Renovation transformed the bathroom within its existing footprint, creating a space that feels brighter, more open and more intentional without adding square footage.
The Challenge: Create More Space Without Adding Square Footage
The original bathroom had everything it needed functionally, but a tall partition wall surrounding the shower visually divided the room. It interrupted sight lines between the vanity and shower and made the bathroom feel more enclosed than it actually was.
Previous water-related concerns also needed to be addressed, making this an opportunity to look beyond finishes and rebuild the bathroom for long-term performance.
Opening the Bathroom to More Light
One of the most impactful changes was also one of the simplest.
Rather than changing the entire floor plan, the upper portion of the existing shower wall was removed and replaced with clear glass. The new glass enclosure allows light and views to travel through the bathroom, immediately making the space feel larger and more connected.
The lower portion of the wall was retained where needed, and two recessed shower niches were framed into the walls to provide convenient storage without adding shelves or accessories that would interrupt the clean design.
Custom Details Make the Difference
The new vanity became a defining feature of the bathroom. Custom flat-panel rift-cut oak cabinetry introduces natural warmth while maintaining the clean lines of the contemporary design. White quartz countertops, vessel sinks and wall-mounted Brizo faucets create a streamlined vanity with less visual clutter.
A large illuminated mirror connects both sink stations, while warm brass and bronze finishes are layered throughout the cabinetry hardware, plumbing, lighting and shower enclosure.
The wall-mounted faucets also required careful planning behind the finished surfaces. Plumbing rough-ins had to coordinate precisely with the countertop height, vessel sinks and drain locations before installation.
Handmade Tile Brings Color and Character
The shower introduces the strongest color moment in the room with locally handmade Mercury Mosaics tile in a rich denim tone.
Installed in a vertical stack, the tile draws the eye upward while the subtle variation inherent in the handmade material adds texture and depth. Champagne bronze shower fixtures bring warmth against the blue tile and connect back to the metal finishes used throughout the bathroom.
Designed for Everyday Comfort
Beautiful materials were only part of the renovation. The bathroom was also updated to make everyday routines more comfortable and functional.
Heated tile flooring adds warmth underfoot, while updated plumbing and electrical accommodate the wall-mounted faucets, vessel sinks, illuminated mirror and bidet toilet. The bath fan was also relocated, and new shower plumbing, drainage and electrical systems were coordinated as part of the renovation.
The result is a bathroom that feels noticeably larger and brighter even though the footprint remained essentially the same.
A Primary Bathroom That Finally Fits the Home
The finished bathroom feels contemporary without feeling cold.
Natural rift-cut oak, white quartz, handmade denim tile and warm metal finishes create a restrained palette with depth and warmth. More importantly, the renovation solved the issues that were holding the original bathroom back while creating a space that now feels connected to the rest of the homeowners’ updates.
It is a good example of what thoughtful bathroom remodeling can accomplish without increasing square footage. Sometimes the biggest transformation comes from making smarter use of the space you already have.
