Home Office: Building Space to Your Style

Working from home has become the norm for many of our clients. As offices and careers are increasingly flexible interior plans have had to follow suit.

The typical home office needs of our clients range from those who work exclusively at home to family-friendly command centers.

We’ve created traditional studies that project formal professionalism to open, casual offices to tucked away desk nooks suited for everything from studying to crafty projects  – we’ve designed it all!

Our favorite ways to customize home offices with a more distinct style are bold paint, graphic wallpaper, accents lights, floating shelves, and sophisticated statement furniture.

When it comes down to it, just like any other part of your home the office should reflect your specific lifestyle. If you’re looking for office inspiration, take a peek below at a few of our favorite client’s offices.

Client Home Stories: Wendy & Chris

As we kickoff 2018, one thing we’re genuinely excited about is sharing more stories behind our client’s beautiful homes! While it’s always fun to see the finished product, sometimes it’s even more interesting to hear how and why it got there. Today, we’re starting our series with a feature on Chris and Wendy’s breathtaking Autumn Ridge “Swiss House” (their nickname for it, which we love).

Making Memories
A blended family with five kids ranging from ages 24-15, Wendy and Chris needed a home with lots of room for gathering together and hosting their busy crew! They love their layout with its many functional spaces, especially the large kitchen with a view. Wendy’s favorite memory in their home so far is watching Chris cook a fabulous meal, with their kids all congregated around the center island as the Sonos provided the soundtrack overhead.

Rustic Glam Style
When it came to creating the mood of the home, Wendy had a clear idea in mind: rustic glamor. Reflected in all of the unique material combinations such as barn wood floors and sparkly accent chandeliers, bold, but still functional, finishes echo throughout each space. Wendy and Chris also sang the praises of their Interior Designer extraordinaire, Lisa Robbins of Design Créatif! She seamlessly translated their unique style, and even hand drew designs for the bathroom cabinetry.

The Family that Lounges Together
One of Chris and Wendy’s requirements was designing fun, usable places for their family to spread out, relax, and enjoy time together. Each kid has a separate bedroom and bathroom, along with a casual upstairs lounge for watching tv or doing homework. The lower level is ready for hosting of all kinds! It boasts a sport court, cozy fireplace, games, adjacent outdoor bonfire pit, and full kitchen for baking up treats.

Front Porch Life
When asked to name their favorite spot in their home, Wendy, and Chris both agree that the front porch claims first place. As construction was happening, they liked to check out each week’s progress on Friday evenings. They’d bring along a cooler, swing their feet off the front porch, watch the sunset, and enjoy their own private happy hour.

Thanks to Chris and Wendy for sharing their building experience with us! We loved hearing about how they’re creating memories in their new home. Finally, we want to give recognition to our hard-working team. Wendy had nothing but wonderful things to say about everyone from our Architect, Dave Zweber to Custom One’s owner, Todd, to our VP of Operations, Cheryl, to Home Sale Consultant, Lori – best crew in the business!

Giving Back: Granting Matt’s Wish

As the end of 2017 draws near, we’ve been reflecting on our highlights as a company over the past year. By far, our greatest joy was partnering with our friends at Make-A-Wish Minnesota to grant wishes for local children and families facing big challenges.

A few weeks ago, we had the pleasure of meeting a fantastic nine-year-old named Matt and his sweet family. After being diagnosed with brain cancer, Matt’s past year has been spent in and out of hospitals and chemo treatments.

Recently, Matt and his family received amazing news: his last scans were clear! It was our honor to help them celebrate by surprising Matt with a trip to Legoland California. We don’t think there was a dry eye in the house when Matt’s Lego and gift card scavenger hunt ended with the big reveal.

To give you an even clearer picture of how special this family is, in the midst of their hard year, they’ve decided to pay it forward. They want other people to experience the power of giving this Christmas and will be buying gifts for hospitalized children instead of buying each other presents. What a beautiful example of generosity and Christmas spirit!

Relive this heartwarming day with us in the photos below. Thank you to our friend Jill of Simply Viewed Creative for capturing each moment with care!

Making Memories: Meeting Santa & Toys for Tots

Is there any better way to summarize our Santa event than with the photo above? This time of year is full of holiday magic; and honestly, is there anyone who represents Christmas wonder more than Santa himself?

One of the biggest joys of celebrating Christmas as a parent is reliving it through the eyes of your children. We love doing our part to spread holiday cheer with this annual event; we look forward to this tradition each year.

Last weekend, our team hosted 21 families with 41 children,
served 35 warm cookies,
toasted with 22 cups of cider,
donated 23 gifts to Toys for Tots,
and created countless priceless memories.

Thank you to everyone who came by to visit, take a photo with Santa (thanks, Grupa Portrait Studio!), and donate toys to Minnesota children in need. We’re grateful to kickoff the Christmas season with such generosity and joy.

Below are just a few more photos from the afternoon. It was hard to narrow it down to only a handful of pictures, all of them were adorable!

Lighting Trends: The Jewelry of the Home

One of our team’s perennial favorite topics of discussion is design trends. We love talking about what’s new in our industry, and what styles we’re seeing our clients pursue. Our favorite interior trend on the rise? Accent lighting!

The era of lifeless fixtures that merely blend into each room is long gone. Lighting now is all about adding a big or bold flash of style. We like to think of lights as the jewelry of the home; they’re a fun, standout accessory that lends a sense of personality to any room.

Overall, we’re seeing more and more homeowners select large-scale, glitzy, and dramatic light fixtures. However, beyond making a statement, lights are also an excellent way to balance spaces.

Whether it’s a different texture, color, pattern, or material that’s needed, accent lights are the perfect solution. Like the punctuation that structures a sentence, lighting can guide your eyes through a room or floorplan, seamlessly connecting separate design ideas.

Scroll through the images below to see our how our designers approach lighting throughout various projects. We think you’ll find their choices interesting and informative!

New Development: The Royal Club

Nestled among mature trees and a storied, state-of-the-art golf course, Custom One Homes is happy to introduce a vibrant new family community, The Royal Club. Formerly Tartan Park Golf Course, this Lake Elmo gem has legendary origins. Renamed The Royal Club to honor a King and Queen of their sport, the front nine holes were designed by Annika Sorenstam, while the back nine holes are the last created by the one and only, Arnold Palmer.

Annika recently spoke with WCCO’s David Lee, ahead of traveling to Minnesota to host her Annika Intercollegiate Golf Event (which will take place at The Royal Club in the future). Click on the audio link embedded below to listen to her discuss her passion for designing courses, and what she hopes will define The Royal Club experience.

Pioneered by golf industry veteran, Hollis Cavner, this family-focused neighborhood will offer first-class services and amenities in an informal environment. The Royal Club aspires to be a welcoming place where families feel at home sharing activities together and making memories. Hollis is passionate about introducing younger generations to golf; he hopes this new course will spark a love for the game in countless young people.

With prices beginning in the $900,000s, build your custom home in this private golf community surrounded by rolling hills and natural beauty. Enjoy access to a freshly renovated golf course, grab dinner in the modern clubhouse, break a sweat in the future fitness area, and lay by the soon-to-be pool. Golf lessons will also be available for all ages and skill levels. The upcoming fitness center will overlook the course; so you can multitask hitting the gym while observing your son or daughter practice their game!

For those hoping to host friends and family, charming overnight guest cottages will also be on the property near the main clubhouse. Allowing you to give your out-of-town guests (short-term stays) the best of both worlds: the privacy of a hotel only steps away from your home! Do you want to get in on the ground floor of this beautiful new Lake Elmo community? Get in touch with us today to ask questions and reserve your lot!

Spaces Magazine Home Feature

Building a new home from the ground up is an all-encompassing experience. No matter which side you may be on, contractor or homeowner, there are endless choices to make and details to process.

When Custom One’s president, Todd, began crafting a home for his own family, he knew he had a rare opportunity: experiencing his company as a client. The decision was a no-brainer, Todd jumped at the chance to create his new home with Custom One!

As an expert in the remodeling industry, Todd had an idea of what current materials and trends interested him most. However, as a father and husband, he also weighed which features and finishes most suited his family.

From the separate “wing” designed as the perfect hangout for his teenage sons to the security and shower systems with customized settings for him and his wife, Todd had a blast building their modern Woodbury home!

Want to dive deeper into Todd’s design process and see more photos of his breathtaking home? Click on the PDF links below the gallery to read the full article from our friends at Spaces Magazine – they did a fantastic job!

Parade Home: Warm Woodbury Traditional

Believe it or not, this Saturday, September 9th, is already the opening of the Fall 2017 Parade of Homes. After months of preparation and planning, we can’t wait to get things rolling and start sharing our models!

Of the three homes we’re featuring this fall, we might be most excited about this elegant Woodbury traditional. (We reserve the right to change our minds and say that about the other two homes as well!)

Warm and bright, this family-centered home seamlessly combines modern trends with timeless touches. Sophisticated finishes set apart the more traditional spaces. Such as the paneled formal dining room, however, the entire floor plan is tied together by its classic but cozy style.

A spacious five bedrooms and five bathrooms, other highlights of this family-centered home include a gourmet kitchen and spa-style master suite. The finished lower-level features an open wet bar and living room, perfect for hosting everything from Sunday football to teenage hangout sessions to family movie nights. Be sure to add this beauty to your Parade plans – we hope to see you there!
