Organization Tips to Keep Your Home Tidy

Spring has sprung and it’s the perfect time to get a head start on home organization! Not sure where to begin? We’ve got you covered with some of our best home organization tips. With these home organization tips, your home will be neat and orderly in no time!

Mudroom Organization

Mudrooms are becoming commonplace in most homes, and for good reason! A mudroom is your home’s first line of defense when it comes to keeping tidy. A built-in bench with shoe storage, hooks, and cubbies provides plenty of space to hang outdoor gear and store purses and backpacks. Another great option is built-in lockers, which provide each member of the family with their own designated space. Baskets pair well with open shelving because they keep small items together and out of sight.

Laundry Room Organization

Laundry can be a time-consuming process but one thing that makes it easier is a well-organized laundry room. Adding cabinets or shelving in the laundry room ensures items like laundry detergent, stain remover, and dryer sheets are easy to find. Folding clothes and treating stains is a breeze with plenty of counter space, too. Once clothes are clean, a built-in rack provides the perfect place to hang items to try or keep them wrinkle-free. Is your laundry room on the smaller side? Place a piece of butcher block or inexpensive laminate countertop over the top of a front loading washer and dryer to create counter space, then add shelving or cabinets above. Or, stack a front loading washer and dry to create enough space for shelving and a hanging rack next to them.

Master Closet Organization

There’s nothing quite as overwhelming as an overcrowded, unorganized master closet. Luckily, there are a few solutions that will keep your closet looking tidy. To make the most of your master closet’s available space, utilize a mix of shelving and hanging space. Next, invest in quality hangers. Opting for a slimmer hanger lets you maximize your closet’s space. Also consider hangers for pants, ties, and scarves. To keep smaller items organized and easy to find, use baskets. For watches and jewelry, consider placing trays on shelves or in drawers.

Don’t forget to do a seasonal purge, either! For example, as you transition your winter wardrobe to spring/summer, remove any items you didn’t wear. Sorting through and donating clothing and shoes you didn’t wear will keep your closet free of clutter and allows you to give back to the community.

Pantry Organization

Keeping your pantry organized means ingredients and snacks are easier to find. A simple place to start is to sort items by category. For example, group baking items, snacks, and breakfast foods together into their own basket or separate part of the pantry. Clear containers are also helpful to keep your pantry uniform, make it easy to see what they hold, and can be stacked depending on their style. If your pantry has deeper shelves, place less used ingredients and items at the back. Then, place a basket filled with everyday items in front of or on top of them. When you need to access the items in the back, simply remove the basket.

For homes with small children, place kid’s snacks on the bottom pantry shelf. This will make it easier for kids to reach them and reduce the chance they’ll accidentally bump other items off the shelf in the process. To get the most out of a small pantry, add an over the door shelf for spices or food storage items. Removing unnecessary bulky packaging can also help to save space.

Office Organization

Keeping your home office organized and clutter free is key to enhancing your productivity. The first step to a clean office is sorting through and purging unnecessary paperwork cluttering your desk. While sorting through paperwork, separate documents into three piles: shred/recycle, file, and needs action. For the items you file, consider a color-coded filing system. Assign a color to each category and use coordinating colored hanging folders. Next, sort items like writing utensils and sticky notes into categories and organize them in drawers, baskets, containers, and bins to make it easier to find them when you need them.

6 Porches We Love: Blend Indoor and Outdoor Living

Spring has officially arrived and it’s time to get outside and enjoy that fresh, springtime air. Living in the Midwest means enduring the cold and snow so when spring and summer finally make an appearance, you can bet we make the most of it! From backyard barbeques to quiet nights, decks and porches are the perfect way to take advantage of warmer weather.

Many homeowners are opting to add covered porches leading out to a deck in their new home’s design and we can’t blame them! They’re the perfect way to seamlessly blend indoor and outdoor living, while easily transitioning from one season to the next.

Custom Home Building Process Video #3: Passing of the Torch Meeting

At Custom One Homes, we understand each of our clients has their own personality, specific needs, and lifestyle. That’s why our goal is to build them a home that truly reflects them. From the very first meeting to the day we turn over the keys, our team works closely with you to design every detail of your home.

Over the past year or so, we’ve started to share more of our client’s stories by offering an inside look at what it’s like to build a new home with Custom One Homes. Sharing these behind the scenes peeks into our building process has been amazing, which is why we’re so excited to share our latest video series in collaboration with the Rippentrop family.

The Rippentrop family is composed of Darin and Erin and their two elementary aged children. In the first video, we got to learn more about the Rippentrops and what they envision for their new home. With a desire to build a home that suits their busy lifestyle as business professionals while also offering a relaxing at home retreat, Darin and Erin chose to build their new home in the Autumn Bluff neighborhood of Woodbury, MN.

In the last video of the series, we followed along as the Rippentrops began the design process for their new custom home. Working with our team, Darin and Erin were able to make design selections that fit their unique style and personality.

Today, we’re thrilled to share the third video in the series. In this video, you’ll learn all about the “passing of the torch” phase of building a new home with Custom One Homes. From discussing the site survey to finalizing each detail, our team is there to answer each and every question before moving on to the next phase.

Granting Matt’s Wish

As the end of 2017 draws near, we’ve been reflecting on our highlights as a company over the past year. By far, our greatest joy was partnering with our friends at Make-A-Wish Minnesota to grant wishes for local children and families facing big challenges.

A few weeks ago, we had the pleasure of meeting a fantastic nine-year-old named Matt and his sweet family. After being diagnosed with brain cancer, Matt’s past year has been spent in and out of hospitals and chemo treatments.

Recently, Matt and his family received amazing news: his last scans were clear! It was our honor to help them celebrate by surprising Matt with a trip to Legoland California. We don’t think there was a dry eye in the house when Matt’s Lego and gift card scavenger hunt ended with the big reveal.

To give you an even clearer picture of how special this family is, in the midst of their hard year, they’ve decided to pay it forward. They want other people to experience the power of giving this Christmas and will be buying gifts for hospitalized children instead of buying each other presents. What a beautiful example of generosity and Christmas spirit!

Relive this heartwarming day with us in the photos below. Thank you to our friend Jill of Simply Viewed Creative for capturing each moment with care!

Style Guide: The Royal Club Model Home in Lake Elmo

The 2019 Spring Parade of Homes is just a few weeks away and we can’t wait to share our four beautiful homes with you! In fact, we’re so excited we’re giving you a sneak peek at the interior design materials of Model #340 on tour, located in The Royal Club lifestyle and golf community.

What: 2019 Spring Parade of Homes
Where: Model #340 at 1872 Annika Drive, Lake Elmo, MN 55042
When: March 2nd-31st, Open Thursdays through Sundays from 12-6 PM
Parade Page

This four bedroom, four bathroom home is located in the Royal Club neighborhood of Lake Elmo, MN and features a modern rustic style designed by Lisa Robbins of Design Créatif. Overlooking the Royal Club Championship golf course, this home takes luxury to a whole new level with a chef’s kitchen, spa-like owners’ suite, exercise room, and pub-inspired bar. But that’s not all! Every detail of this home was carefully selected to add elements of luxury to the finished design. Here are some of the highlights you’ll see in this home.

Kohler Touchless Sensate Faucet

The touchless design of this stainless steel kitchen faucet not only looks beautiful but it also makes working in the kitchen a breeze. With just a wave of the hand, cooking and cleanup tasks become quicker and easier while creating a more hygienic kitchen environment. You’ll love the high arch of this faucet, which offers more clearance for filling pots and cleaning up.

Cambria Oakmoor Countertop

The oversized, custom island is topped with a gorgeous Cambria quartz countertop in the style, Oakmore. This beautiful design gets its name from a medieval English village and includes strands of caramel, tan, and cream to mimic the wood grain of majestic oak trees from the neighboring countryside. As an added bonus, every Cambria countertop includes a full lifetime warranty.

Feiss Lighting

This beautiful chandelier light from the Feiss Hilo collection perfectly plays into the modern rustic design of this home. With an oil rubbed bronze finish, slim metal arms extending from the center, and candelabra bulbs, what’s not to love about this light fixture?

Porcelain Tile Accents

The tile shower in the master bathroom features a niche accented by Art Sysley porcelain tile from The Tile Shop. This bold and colorful deco tile uses shades of black, grey, and tan to form geometric shapes, adding an unexpected flair to this custom shower.

Sherwin Williams Paint in Gossamer Veil

This home favors a neutral color palette thanks to the paint color Gossamer Veil from Sherwin Williams. The soft gray tones allow individual design elements to pop and complements the rustic elements of this home wonderfully.

There are so many more amazing features to this beautifully styled home. Interested in seeing this stunning home in person? We’d love for you to stop by during the Spring Parade of Homes!

Make-A-Wish: Kelly’s Murder Mystery Luau

We’ve written previously about our ongoing partnership with Make-A-Wish Minnesota. In 2017, we had the distinct honor of helping send Andy to Disney World and Matt to Legoland!

Recently, we had the pleasure of meeting a young woman named Kelly and her family. Our entire team (and quite a few partners and friends) gathered together to throw Kelly a Murder Mystery Luau.

However, instead of the big reveal merely being a who-done-it, we got to send Kelly off on the Hawaiian vacation of her dreams! Enabling a deserving family to make lifetime memories – that’s our kind of community investment.

Want to see more of our celebration with Kelly, or see our staff fully garbed in grass skirts and Hula gear? Check out a few of our favorite shots from the day below! Thanks to our photographer, Rachel Lea, for capturing all the fun.

And last but not least, thanks to our fantastic team for all pitching in and always being game to look silly for a good cause. Finally, thank you to our own Julie Newton for heading up planning this excellent, fun-filled afternoon!

Granting Andy’s Wish

If you follow Custom One on Facebook, you’ve probably seen us post quite a bit about our partnership with the Make-A-Wish Foundation this year. Staying connected to our roots, giving back, and cultivating generosity are all important values to us. We love helping families create beautiful homes, but we’re also passionate about using our resources to build up our greater community. Along with our friends at Make-A-Wish Minnesota, this summer our team had the privilege of meeting a young man named Andy.

In cahoots with his parents and under the guise of looking at his mom’s latest work project, Custom One’s owner, Todd, recently gave Andy and his family a tour of our Luxury Home. However, instead of just getting a glimpse of the home’s garage, the excursion ended with an exciting surprise: they’re heading to Disney World! Andy is growing up with a rare, but thankfully treatable, heart disease. Although his Shone’s Complex does require careful monitoring, Andy’s parents are still determined to provide him with everyday childhood experiences.

Everyone at Custom One felt moved by this family’s story – we don’t think there was a dry eye in the house when Andy received his surprise! Thank you to our friends at Make-A-Wish for making this moment possible, our team for facilitating the event, and to the Woodbury Bulletin for documenting our memorable day. Browse through the images below to get a better glimpse of this sweet family and our joy-filled afternoon together.

Feel the Difference of a Quality Built Home

Have you ever invested extra time or money in something and noticed the difference it made towards the final result? Maybe you waited hours for that beef tenderloin to cook to perfection or you spent a little more on a real leather bag that will last you for years.

At Custom One, we approach building homes with a similar philosophy. Our team believes creating something that stands the test of time is worth the investment. The moment you set foot in one of our quality built homes; you’ll feel the real difference craftsmanship makes.

Beautiful features and finishes make our homes memorable. However, there are countless more subtle elements working together in harmony that distinguish a Custom One Home from the competition.

We get it; the typical homeowner doesn’t get excited about things like plumbing and mechanical systems the way we do. (Building is our thing, after all.) But all of these less flashy details add up to make an exceptional home.

From high-efficiency windows that keep drafts at bay to top-notch plumbing and mechanical systems that serve as the backbone of your home to smart technology that enables even heating and cooling without wasting energy – modern building methods mean an easy, efficient, and enjoyable place to call home.

We understand if you’d still rather focus on selecting more fun things tile patterns, countertops, and light fixtures. After all, it’s our responsibility to focus on technical details and provide knowledge about our industry. Your job is to concentrate on creating a home that reflects your unique lifestyle.

Custom Home Building Process Video #1: Meet the Rippentrops

At Custom One Homes, the heart of what we do is creating beautiful homes around people’s stories. Your lifestyle is made up of countless small details, family traditions, specific needs, and your unique taste. It’s our job to listen and design a home that’s distinctively yours.

Over the past year, we’ve been sharing more of the stories behind client’s homes and giving a greater glimpse into our building process. It’s always fun to see the finished product and gorgeous photos, but sometimes it’s even more interesting to hear how and why it got there.

The video above is all about our collaboration with Erin and Darin Rippentrop. Two successful professionals with elementary age kids, Erin and Darin are busy people who wanted their home to be an everyday sanctuary and weekend retreat.

From beginning to end, our process revolves around families. By forming a close relationship and guiding clients through designs selections, and construction, we ensure a final product that they’ll love for years to come.

Want to know more about how we can create a home that reflects you? Watch Darin and Erin discuss their building process at greater length in the featured video! And please, don’t hesitate to contact our team anytime with questions about working together.
